McDavid named Grayson police chief

Aug. 14, 2013 — Grayson has a new police chief and he is no stranger to the work.

Former Carter County Sheriff Kevin “Mooch” McDavid was selected for the post out of a large pool of applicants, said Mayor George Steele.

“We had people apply for the job from California and Florida, from all over,” Steele said. “But locally we only had a few viable candidates. I think he will be a really good fit.”

McDavid has 24 years of experience in law enforcement and served four terms as sheriff.

After nearly three years out of police work, McDavid says he is ready to return.

“I started my career in law enforcement in Grayson,” McDavid said. “I thought it would be a wonderful opportunity to work here at home. Grayson has always been home to me and that overall aspect is what made the job attractive.”

The new chief said he probably will have items on a “to do” list but first he has to reacquaint himself with the department.

“The main thing now is going back in and working with the officers, mayor and City Council,” McDavid said. “I am sure some of the officers have ideas to share, too. I want to talk with each of them before we make an agenda.”

McDavid said he would like to see more community involvement with the department.

“Things like the recent tour the department gave the boy scouts or just eating lunch at the schools goes a long way,” McDavid said.

He began his duties on Tuesday.
