Journal-Times staff wins 17 KPA awards

Jan. 29, 2014 — Six first place finishes were among 17 awards for advertising and news excellence received by the Grayson Journal-Enquirer and Olive Hill Times in the 2013 statewide competition of the Kentucky Press Association.

Awards were presented Friday in Lexington at the KPA’s 145th annual convention.

Editor Leeann Akers won two first place awards among Class I weeklies, including best general news story and best investigative story.

She also received a second place for best spot news coverage.

Other individual first place finishes were Crystal J. Damron, best sports feature; Joe Lewis, best ongoing story; and Amanda Kelley, best health care/medical ad.

The entire J-T staff won first place for the best special section.

Other awards included Nathan Hall, third place, special section design; Damron, third place, best feature story; Keith Kappes, second place and honorable mention, best column; MacKenzie Bates, second and third place, best sports feature; Lewis, honorable mention, best analytical story; Bates, third place, best sports picture; Karla Spencer and Bates, third place, best sports page; and Spencer, Hall and Bates, second place, best sports special section.
