Grayson Fire Department progress continues

Spring 2010 completion date expected

By Tonia Rose, staff writer

Nov. 18, 2009 Architect Robert Summerfieldt recently told Grayson City Council progress on construction of the new fire department is going well with a completion date of spring expected.

Summerfieldt visited November’s regular meeting with the field report and request for payment in the amount of $31,076.91 with a balance of $739,327.76 to be owed as the work continues.

“Everything is going excellent,” he told council. “We do expect to have the roof on this week.”

Work presently in progress includes installing structural steel and steel trim items, installing the roof insulation system, installing metal studs and plumbing layout and preparations.

Work still anticipated on the building includes structural steel, siding, roofing and plumbing.

Summerfeldt said among the issues discussed included ironwork nearly completed and additional adjustments still required around the tower.

Other issues on the field report included:

• Plumbing work commencing and resolving some confusion concerning where the drinking fountain would be located

• Plumber has proposed changing the gas piping specified to a different types. No change in cost required but more rapid installation and simpler connections.

• Detail conditions at masonry work at the tower base discussed and resolved

• Changes resulting from meeting on keying and security systems still under consideration

Summerfeldt asked the council to accept a second and third change order, putting the change totals to $13,872.

Change order #2 included:

• Increase in water tap fee from $9,500 in the construction contract and adding $1,950

• Add vinyl tile to the kitchen floor prior to kitchen equipment installation and add $339.96 to cover the deletion of floor covering made prior to construction bidding in order to cut costs.

• Keypad door locks to be provided by owner and installed by contractor during general construction, G.C. to deduct original locks from contract and provide labor to install owner’s locks in exchange for adding window lights to doors as reviewed with the fire department personnel.

• Deduct $300 for the cost of the project construction sign

Change order #3:

• Change to HVAC breakers and starters – pending

• Change specific black steel gas piping to corrugated stainless steel piping system with corresponding changes in regulators, system pressure, all in accordance with code and utility company requirements – no change pending approval by engineers.

The net amount of $1,989.96 resulted in change order #2, Summerfieldt reported to council. No costs were added per change order #3. Mayor George Steele told Summerfieldt he and the council were pleased project appeared to on target for a spring completion. “You guys are doing a great job over there,” Steele added. “ I know all of us are anticipating this getting done.”
