New Christy Minstrels

Nov. 18, 2009 The New Christy Minstrels, the Grammy Award winner 1960’s folk group, recently took time from their latest national tour to make a brief stop at Walker’s Grill in Olive Hill. While there, they enjoyed visiting with friends and relatives of Eddie Boggs, a current member of the group, and eating what Boggs describes as “the world’s best hamburgers.” Boggs, formerly of Soldier, has been with the group since 1998.

The Minstrels, with five original members, had performed to an audience of over 2,000 in Charleston, WV. the night before and were on their way Sedalia, Missouri. As they would be traveling west on I-64, Boggs did not want to miss the opportunity to show his hometown, family and friends to the group. The folks at Walker’s Grill were kind enough to meet Boggs’ request to open for the private gathering. Several of Boggs’ relatives had traveled from Ohio and western Kentucky to be a part of the occasion. The group particularly enjoyed stories told by Eddie’s cousin, Jack Clark, of Soldier. His conversation became the topic of their conversations throughout the trip.

No one in the musical group was disappointed as the food was as good as Boggs had described it, and meeting and talking to those who had gathered proved to be one of the highlights of their tour. The many friends and relatives who came were to to be disappointed as they were able to sing along with the group singing several of their hit songs, such as “This Land Is Your Land” Saturday Night” and Green, Green.”
