The warrants were signed for his arrest, but Rickey Phillips decided to turn himself into police Thursday on charges of battery against a Spring Valley High School student in West Virginia.
The former quarterback for the Kentucky Christian University arrived at the Huntington Police Department Thursday and was arrested for allegedly causing injury and unconsciousness to 18-year-old Christopher Todd Wellman, said Sgt. John Williams.
Rickey PhillipsÕ brother, Justin Phillips, also was arrested on charges of malicious wounding, after he allegedly beat 17-year-old William Kyle Layne the same night Wellman was injured.
ÒThey were taken into custody, but then posted bond and were released the same day,Ó Williams commented Friday.
According to police, the fight took place following a phone call Wellman made to Rickey PhillipsÕ girlfriend. The original complaint states that between the hours of 12:45 a.m. and 1:20 a.m., Oct. 5, the Phillips brothers went to WellmanÕs apartment in Prichard, W.Va., and when Wellman opened the door, he was knocked unconscious. ÒRickey continued to hit him while one of WellmanÕs friends tried to get him off,Ó the police report says.
There was no word as to when the Phillips brothers will appear in court.
Rick Cooper, athletics director for KCU, said Phillips was immediately suspended from the football team following the charges.
