Grayson Council interviews

By Myra Hogan, managing editor

July 2, 2008 The second reading was held for the 2008-2009 Grayson City Budget Monday evening, June 23.

This took place in a special meeting after council members were in executive session from 4 – 6:30 p.m. discussing personnel and litigation.

Interviews have been held for the position of Grayson Police Chief, however as of Tuesday afternoon an announcement had yet to be made naming whom the new chief will be.

It is the mayor’s call to choose a chief that will replace the former chief Keith Hill who recently retired. “The council and I are in agreement on it,” said Mayor George Steele during the meeting. And, he announced a news conference for the next day to give the decision. That conference was later cancelled.

The new budget, which will run from July 1, 2008 through June 30, 2009, has estimated revenues at $1,534,750 in the general fund.

The revenue list named the sources as follows: property taxes - $320,000; licenses and permits - $594,250; intergovernment revenue - $78,890; fines and forfeits - $30,000; charges for services - $10,900; and other revenue - $500,710.

Appropriations for the general fund are: general government - $300,280; police-FADE - $736,254; fire - $146,116; streets - $268,100 for a total of $1,534,750.

The budget also names other revenues and appropriations: LEGA fund - $123,100; and MRAP fund - $60,000.

The council decided to postpone the 2% proposed salary raises for city employees until a work session could be held on incorporating an evaluation process by which raises would be determined.

Mayor Steele announced the Grayson Police Department would be conducting road checks throughout the holiday weekend, checking for drivers under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol.

Main Street Renaissance provided funds for work underway on Grayson’s Main Street. According to Mayor Steele the city only has $33,000 in the project with the remainder of the $135,000 provided by Main Street Renaissance.
