Farmers Market to open

June 17, 2009 — The Carter County Farmers Market met on June 9th to elect officers, market managers, and to set the opening date.

The Carter County Farmers Market will officially open for the 2009 season on Saturday, June 27, at 8 a.m. at both the Grayson and Olive Hill locations. The Grayson Farmers Market is located at the shed on the old county fairgrounds 2 miles east of Grayson on Rt. 60. The Olive Hill Market is located on the parking lot of Slone’s Supermarket.

The days of operation for both markets are the same as last year. The Grayson market will be open on each Tuesday, Friday and Saturday each week starting at 8 a.m. and staying until sold out. They will also be open each Thursday evening at 3:00 p.m. until sold out. The Olive Hill market will be open each week on Wednesday and Saturday, starting at 8:00 a.m. until sold out and again on Monday evenings from 3 p.m. until sold out.

Officers for the 2009 season are John Ruggles, President; Sarah Beth Blevins, Vice President; Tina Jenkins, Secretary and Marjorie Skaggs, Treasurer. The market managers are Rick Wells for Grayson and Wade Green for Olive Hill.

The Market had the best season in 2008 that they had in 4 years, grossing over $32,000 in sales for the season. The Carter County Farmers Market wishes to thank all the citizens of Carter County who supported the Farmers Market in 2008 and hope you support the market again in 2009.



Carter County has received $9,048.00 in Senior Citizen Farmers Market Nutrition

Program coupons. This is enough for 377 eligible senior citizens to receive $24.00 in

food coupons each. The schedule for distribution is as follows:

• June 22 from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. at NE KY Community Action Agency in

Olive Hill

• June 23 from 10:00-12:00 noon at the NE KY Community Action Agency in Grayson

If any coupons remain, the remaining coupons will be available at the Carter

County Extension Office until all is given out.

Eligibility requirements are: you must be 60 years of age or older and a

monthly income of $1,174.00 or less for a household of one. The monthly income limit is increased by $406 for each additional household member. You must bring proof of age and proof of Income with you in order to receive the coupons.

If you are eligible and cannot come to the distribution, a representative can

come in your place as long as they bring your proof of age and proof of income. For more information, call the Carter County Extension office at 474-6686.
