GPD gets big firearms

By Myra Hogan

March 19, 2008 Grayson Police Department now has five AR-15 rifles added to their arsenal.

“These weapons are the choice of weapons for every police department,” said Grayson Police Chief Keith Hill. “It is something the police department has needed for several years and never been able to afford.”

According to Chief Hill the weapons will not be issued until more in-depth training has been completed.

Sgt. Jeff May and Officer Michael Fouch negotiated the purchase and were given the best price by AA Firearms in Grayson.

“We are hoping to be able to get the funding for six more of theses weapons,” Chief Hill said.

“A lot of officers have been killed in the past because they were out-gunned by perpetrators,” Hill said. “These weapons will be used on police raids, when police are assaulted and their lives are in danger. They hold 30 rounds.”

The Grayson Police Department has a total of 12 officers on their force, including a School Resource Officer, an undercover officer, a detective, the chief and nine on-the-road officers.

The officers’ cars are equipped with computers, furnished by a grant from Homeland Security.
