Officcer injured in hit and run

By Myra Hogan, managing editor

Dec. 31, 2008 Olive Hill Police Officer Richard “Dick” Williams was on patrol Christmas Eve in Olive Hill when he received a call reporting a female stealing items in a local store.

According to Olive Hill Police Chief Bobby Hall, Williams arrived on scene and told Sherry R. Tackett that she was under arrest for shoplifting.

“She asked Williams if she could lock up her car first and he said okay,” Hall said.

Instead of locking her car, she jumped in, turned the key and hit the gas.

“She dragged him across the parking lot and tried to side-swipe him into a truck,” Hall said. “The end of his shoe was gone and his pants ripped.”

After medical attention from cuts and bruises, Williams is reported to be doing well and is now back to work.

Hall said Tackett’s car was found wrecked on Rt. 2 at the junction of Jordan Fork, shortly after she hit Williams.

Her head hit the windshield and Hall said there was some blood in the car.

“Someone reported seeing her getting in a white car,” Hall said.

As of Tuesday, Dec. 30, Tackett had not been found.

“I have already got warrants on Tackett,” said Hall. “She is charged with first-degree assault on a police officer and first degree fleeing or evading police, both felonies.”

Other misdemeanor charges include shoplifting, resisting arrest, criminal mischief, leaving the scene of an accident, no insurance and no seatbelt.

The charges will be presented to a Carter County Grand Jury on Jan. 9th.

If anyone has any information on the whereabouts of Tackett, they should report to Chief Hall at 286-2551.
