June 5, 2013 — The editor:
The Carter City community officially closed the third Carter School on Saturday, May 18, 2013. The Closing Bell ceremony was designed to be memorable, reflective, and inclusive - highlighting events and presenters from its years of operation 1939 through the 2013 school year. The event was attended by more than 350 individuals composed of current and former students, faculty, staff, board members, and superintendents. The evening showcased our history and our unity. Harold L. Holbrook, Carter City native and former student, teacher, coach, principal and superintendent, passed the torch from the current school to Grant Menix, who will enter Kindergarten this fall at the new Carter City Elementary.
The finale was offered by the school itself. Together, we stood in silence awaiting and listening for the ringing of the final Closing Bell at Carter School. It was an incredibly moving experience and one that will be etched in our minds for years to come. In the annals of Carter County School history, the farewell ceremony was certainly one for the ages.
With great appreciation, the Carter School Closing Bell Organizing Committee: Jo Holbrook Ashworth, Camila Haney, Ronald Lewis Morgan, Margaret Roark, and Glenda Haney Woods, extend sincere thanks to all those who contributed to the truly once-in-a-lifetime program:
