Exchange student's experience is unforgettable

May 14, 2014 — The editor:

My name is Eva Olsen. I’m an exchange student from Norway, completing my senior year at East Carter High School. It’s been one of my dreams to go abroad to a different country and learn a new culture. I wanted new experiences and to improve my English.

I’ve almost completed my school year now, and I can say that I’ve enjoyed every single day. All the students and teachers have been so welcoming and nice to me. I’ve gotten help and support every time I needed it.

Every day is exciting because I get to see, do and learn something new and different that I never would have in my country. A normal conversation for others might be very special for me. I love meeting new people and learning new personalities. I’m so glad to say that I’ve got so many friends here at East Carter and Grayson that I will never forget. This is now my second home and I feel like one of the Raiders.

I can without a doubt say this has been the best school year in my life. I like the way we can choose between classes that interest us and make the days more fun. I love how I got to experience spirit week, dress up, homecoming, powder-puff and football games in real life instead of through movies. But what I appreciate most is the memories I’ve made with the students. All the conversations and jokes I’ve laughed at have just made every day fun and enjoyable. I would like to say East Carter has strong sprit and conjunction after seeing them stand together in the loss of students and friends. It’s a good school to be a part of.

I’m looking forward to senior breakfast, prom and graduation. I’m sure those will all be big moments in my life. I’m proud of myself for completing a whole academic year with good grades and being able to graduate from an American high school. My plans for the future are not certain. I have one more year back in Norway before college. Time will tell if I choose to come back here for school, but a visit is for sure!
