Role-playing event teaches kids about consequences

Aug. 15, 2012 — The editor:

We are excited about Truth and Consequences: The Choice is Yours, an enrichment event for 9th grade students from West Carter High School which is scheduled for Sept. 21, 8-11 a.m. This will be held at West Carter High School gymnasium. The purpose of the program is to allow students to see the consequences of drug and alcohol abuse. This event is sponsored by the Carter County Cooperative Extension Service, the Carter County Drug Free Coalition, and the West Carter Youth Service Center.

Truth and Consequences: The Choice is Yours is a role-playing event where students will be given a scenario related to drug use. In the time allotted, students will then visit three or more community agencies or officials to learn the consequences of their actions for the role-play.

Parents are invited to accompany their student through the role-play. If parents are unable to attend, a volunteer will be appointed to play the role of the parent. We will need a minimum of 50 volunteers in order to make this program possible.

We would like you to share your knowledge and expertise at Truth and Consequences as a mock-parent. You have been recommended as someone who could be a benefit this program and help make a difference in the future of our youth. Breakfast will be provided to all volunteers.

If you need any additional details, contact the Carter County Extension Office at 474-6686. Feel free to share this information with anyone that may be willing to help. Confirmation of participation is needed by Sept. 7.
