Editor,
I would like to share with the public how to start a neighborhood watch.
Step 1. Define your neighborhood geographically. Start small-20 to 25 homes-so you and your neighbors get to know everyone.
Step 2. Talk to your neighbors. Do they know that a Neighborhood Watch is fun? What are their issues? What nights are the available for a meeting?
Step 3. Call the local Police/Sheriff's Crime Prevention Unit or Trooper Gollihue of the Kentucky State Police, Ashland Post (606) 928-6421. Then you can agree on a mutual meeting date.
Step 4. Ask neighbors to be co-captains (one neighbor per 10 homes)
Step 5. Start a committee with interested neighbors to plan a meeting. Assign someone to advertise the meeting-make or buy food, sign-in sheet.
Step 6. ADVERTISE the meeting to your neighbors. Talk to everyone when you get the opportunity. Get children involved by delivering flyers.
Step. 7. Call your law enforcement officer that will be meeting with you, 48-hours to make sure they can still attend your meeting. Step 8. Set up an information table to sign-in & get any printed material provided by the Officer.
STEP 9.tHE PRESENTATION GENERALLY LASTS ABOUT 45 MINUTES After the meeting you need to schedule a follow-up meeting and thank everyone for coming.
There are two Neighborhood Watch Programs in Carter County; one at Hitchins and one in the Bens' Run-Ky 986 to Sinking Creek area of Olive Hill. I urge every citizen in this county to get involved in a Neighborhood Watch. Our Preamble to our Constitution gives us the right to insure domestic tranquility. A Neighborhood Watch is neighbors helping neighbors watch each other’s homes.
