Letters to the Editor
December 5, 2007 —
Editor,
When a Veteran is admitted to the Veteran’s Hospital they do not receive any type of personal hygiene items that you or I would get upon admittance to a civilian hospital. Although, they have an outstanding staff of caretakers, many Veterans are far from home, have limited resources and little to no family to help them with their solution.
For the past several years the Willard American Legion Family has visited the VA Hospital in Huntington, WV at Christmas with care packages. We take personal hygiene items such as razors, shaving cream, toothbrushes and toothpaste, deodorant, lotion and combs. We also include such comfort items as warm socks, puzzle books, ink pens and pencils, playing cards, candy gum and other treats.
This year, as before, we are asking for the community’s help. There are donation boxes placed in The Dollar Tree in Grayson where you may drop off your donated items. This store did an outstanding job last year in helping job last year in helping our Veterans and they have volunteered to help again this year. We will periodically pick up these items and gift wrap them so that each of the 80 patients in the VA Hospital receives as much needed package for Christmas.
If you would prefer to make a cash donation, that would be welcomed also. We will use that money exclusively to purchase items that we don’t otherwise receive.
Our Veterans have given so much to keep us safe this is a small way that you can give a little back to show your thanks.
If you have any questions please feel free to contact Kathy Lewis at 606-738-6914 or the Willard American Legion at 474-7430 Wednesday through Sunday after 5 p.m.
For God and Country,
Kathy Lewis, President

Editor,
Andrew Jackson Fultz has served the citizens of Carter County for sixty years. My former classmates and I propose that you rename the West Carter County Athletic Complex in his honor. He has been identified as a great educator and coach. He is in the Kentucky High School Athletic Hall of Fame. Since the 16th Regional coaches have recognized Jack Fultz’s greatness we feel our Carter County School Board should do the same; honoring him is long overdue.
As high school sophomores Mr. Fultz was our World History instructor. He was a no nonsense teacher and insisted always that we do our best. He was not an apathetic preoccupied teacher. He encouraged us to expand our knowledge on subjects that were only touched upon in our textbooks.
Our 1953, graduating class consisted of seventy-four students. Of those students ten chose teaching as a career. Some of these teachers taught at prestigious universities.
Knowing these facts we feel our group is qualified to assess Mr. Fultz’s effectiveness in the classroom.
Jack Fultz has always lived in Olive Hill. He is closely identified with the very heart and spirit of his beloved hometown.
Jack Fultz has a “calling” to serve the students of Carter County. He responded to that call and his stellar record reveals how fortunate Carter County was to have him for all these sixty years.
In the end his legacy will be defined by all the students whose lives he has touched – those he inspired in the classroom and on the basketball court.
Please consider our proposal. We will be having a class reunion soon. It would be so nice if at that time we could celebrate Jack Fultz’s honor.
Respectfully,
Betty Jaynes – McDavid
Vice President of 1953, Class
Olive Hill High School
Editor,
I have submitted this letter for anyone with kids, grandkids, other relatives or friends who this may concern.
There will be a new children’s movie out this weekend called “The Golden Compass”. The movie has been described as “Atheism for kids” and is based on the first book of a trilogy entitled “His Dark Materials” that was written by Phillip Pullman. Pullman is a militant atheist and secular humanist who despises C.S. Lewis and the “Chronicles of Narnia”. His motivation for writing this trilogy was specifically to counteract Lewis’ symbolisms of Christ that are portrayed in the Narnia series.
Clearly, Pullman’s main objective is to bash Christianity and promote atheism. Pullman left little doubt about his intentions when he said in a 2003 interview that, “my books are about killing God.” He has even stated that he wants to “kill God in the minds of children.” It has been said of Pullman that he is “the writer the atheist would be praying for if the atheist prayed.”
While “The Golden Compass” movie itself may seem mild and innocent, the books are a much different story. In the trilogy, a young streetwise girl becomes enmeshed in an epic struggle to ultimately defeat the oppressive forces of a senile God. Another character, an ex-nun, describes Christianity as “a very powerful and convincing mistake.” In the final book, characters representing Adam and Eve eventually kill God, who at times is called YAHWEH. Each book in the trilogy gets progressively worse regarding Pullman’s hatred of Jesus Christ.
“The Golden Compass” is set to premier on December 7, during the Christmas season, and will probable by heavily advertised. Promoters hope that unsuspecting parents will take their children to see the movie, that they will enjoy the movie, and that the children will want the books for Christmas.
Please consider a boycott of the movie and the books. Also, pass this information along to everyone you know. This will help to educate parents, so that they will know the agenda of the movie.
