Editor,
Special Thanks to Olive Hill KDMC Outreach Center, Carter Family Pharmacy and Patrons @ Speedway in Olive Hill for their kind help.
On Monday June 16th I was getting gasoline at Speedway in Olive Hill across the street from the Kings Daughters Out Reach Center. My 4 year old son grabbed the nozzle out of the gas tank while it was on and gasoline went all over his face and head, getting into his right eye very badly.
I immediately grabbed him up and rushed in Speedway, making my way to the back of the store where they have a large cleaning sink. As I struggled to hold my 40 pound son up high enough to get his head under the faucet and young lady and gentleman walked to the doorway and offered to call someone for me and asked if they could help. I asked the lady if you could hold Kade's legs while I attempted to hold his eye open. She did and I was able to keep more water in his eyes. The young man spoke with Kade and was having him to count the number of fingers he was holding up. Again, the two patrons offered to call someone for me but I told them I was going to take him across the street to the KDMC clinic. As I left in a rush I told the Speedway attendant that I would be back to pay for the gas. As I walked out the door I overheard the lady who had helped me said she would take care of it.
As I rushed to my car and sat Kade on my lap for the quick trip across the street one gentleman told me he picked up my wallet and gave it to my 12 year old daughter who was still in the car. I thanked him and proceeded to put the car in reverse when another man ran over and took the nozzle out of my tank and hung it back up. I thanked this gentleman as well and was thinking how insane I must look at this point. I was so scared for my son that I was thinking of nothing else but getting him help.
As I entered the KDMC clinic I explained that he had gotten gas in his eyes and I needed their help immediately. The ladies at the desk (Cathy and Serena) quickly went to the back and informed the doctor (Leslie Slone, A.R.N.P.) and they let us in the door and got us to a room.
Once in the room the entire staff worked very quickly to call poison control and to start flushing his eye out. It took at times 4 people to hold him down but all the while the staff (Leslie, Amanda & Chellie) were very caring and gentle with him. Dr. Leslie Slone phoned Dr. Fannin, an optometrist to see if he could see Kade that evening if need be. Fortunately, we did not need to take him but I truly appreciate the thoroughness Ms. Slone took to assure Kade received everything he may need for his injury. Nurse Sue also stopped by the room to check on Kade. Everyone was exceptional and I cannot begin to tell you how grateful I am for that.
We left the clinic late and I made it to Carter Family Pharmacy just as they were closing the drive thru window. They were kind enough to fill his prescription and the Pharmacists, Tom Mattingly also told me that he makes himself available in the event of an emergency, so if I had arrived after they closed I could have phoned him and he would have come back to the pharmacy. I don't think that is the kind of service you expect now days and to know our little town still holds so many special people who are willing to stop and help a stranger is very touching.
I wish I had the all the names but I don't. I just hope that all the individuals that took a moment to help me and my son that day read this and know that I truly thank them for their kindness.
Sincerely,
Annie Wilson
