Letters to the Editor
Feb. 13, 2008 —
Editor,
The Olive Hill Historical Society is creating a list of names and addresses of alumni who attended or graduated from the Old Historic Olive Hill High School Building. We are sending out a plea to anyone who has a list of names from their graduating class. A data base is being compiled hopes to notify those people of the plans for an OHHS Alumni Association.
We are including those who attended at any time during their educational experience such as those who graduated as an 8th grade class member when it became a K-8 school.
Also, we are hoping to find names and addresses of any teacher or administrator who was ever involved with the building during the years it was a part of the educational system of Olive Hill and Carter County Schools.
If you can help, please send information to OHHS, P.O. Box 143, Olive Hill, Kentucky 41164. Or, call Madeline Powell @ 606-286-2124, madohhs@yahoo.com or Linda Lowe @ 286-2124, lrlowe@windstream.net

Editor,
Did you know that in Kentucky there is tougher penalty for cock fighting than for sexual abusing a 12-year-old child?
The following charges to Kentucky sexual abuse laws being proposed. House Bill 211 includes the following:
1. Changing the ages covered in first-degree child sexual abuse (defined as abuse other than rape or sodomy) from “up to 12 to up to 16 years of age”.
2. Adding knowingly masturbating in front of a child to first-degree abuse and increasing the age when the offender is a person of trust.
3. Increasing the penalty for not reporting child sexual abuse when it occurs a second or third time.
4. Increasing the statue of limitations from one year after the incident to five years after the last incident, or five years after the eighteenth birthday or five years after a person first comes to realize he/she was abused (the five years listed here is already in the civil laws). Kentucky is one of only seven states that has not increased the Statue of Limitations on child sexual abuse.
For more information go to www.lrc.ky.gov and click on Kentucky laws on the left, then click on Kentucky Revised Statues (KRS), double click on Access KRS through Title and Chapter and scroll down to Chapter 510. You can find the present laws there.
If you agree with and want to support these revisions please call your legislator at 1-800-372-7181. When you call all you need to say is that you support HB 211. Using your address your message will be directed to the proper legislator.
For more information, or if you have questions about the bill call Shannon at 502-290-4389 or email at Shannon.protectourchildren@yahoo.com. We are a group of concerned Kentuckians, all volunteers of all ages, denominations, and political affiliations.

The Recruitment and Certification Unit for Boyd, Lawrence, Greenup, Carter, and Elliott Counties would like to thank our judges for attending special events and giving their valuable time to show their support for the children who are in foster care. Honorable George Davis III attended a Christmas party for out foster children, this meant so much to our children and our resource homes. We are very thankful for those who go above and beyond their call of duty to make a difference in a child’s life. We appreciate the time that Honorable Kristie Hogg-Gossett gives to our children on one of the most important dates of their life, their adoption. We value the dedication that is put into making an adoption extra special for a child and their permanent families. Without the support of our judges, permanency would not be possible for a child in care.
Any family that is interested in foster care or adoption can call 606-920-2130 for more information. A child is waiting!

Editor,
Many of the citizens of District 3, are concerned over the attempts to keep open and maintain a road that is unused by the public. It is only being considered to remain open and maintained due to a few individuals who want the road for four-wheeling, drumming up signatures in order to have a public hearing on the issue. A public hearing is a respectable and just means of determining the legitimacy of such an issue. However, the voters of District 3 should know while the county does not have enough funds for legitimate road concerns, this project to fix and maintain CR#136 Johns Run-Fields Branch would run into approximately $20,000 by conservative estimates of local contractors. The Fiscal Court reported at its November 13th regular session meeting “that each department check over their expenses and see if there is somewhere they can cut back on expenses” said Judy Roark.
Most of the signers of this petition are not travelers of this road if other than by four wheeler. It is not the county’s responsibility to maintain roads for such use. Also, the road has become a by-way for drug activity and closing it would help make the area safer for locals. Also, this road has not been maintained for over 15 years by the county and by regulation should no longer be a county road due to the inactivity. There are several roads in District 3 that can use and should use these funds that are transversed daily by the voters of District 3. Please contact your Magistrate, Millard Cordle and let him know you are a district 3 voter and you are against wasteful spending in your district.
