KCU falls to Marian in weather-shortened contest

Sept. 4, 2013 — On Saturday, Aug. 31, new KCU Head Coach Gene Peterson and the Knights traveled to Indianapolis to take on the Knights of Marian University, the defending NAIA National Champion and 2013 Pre-season #2 team.

The blue and gold Knights however defeated the red and black knights 23-0 in a weather shortened game.

Because of the weather anomaly in southern Indiana, the game will be remembered for more than just the score. There was significant rain prior to the game, and while there was low pressure in the atmosphere, the game itself was high-pressure for the Knights.

The game began slowly, but Marian scored a field goal just a few moments into the second quarter.

A KCU punt led to Marian’s first score, a two-yard run by junior running back Tevin Lake on an eight-play, 38-yard drive to put MU up 9-0. A pair of pass interference calls and an 11-yard pass to Lake was the big plays on that drive.

After a quick turnover, Marian scored again on a pass from Joey Hecklinski to Jake Wright on a 24-yard strike to the ten-yard line. Lake would do the rest to score from three yards out to take the score to 16-0 at just under seven minutes in the half.

With 6:37 left in the second period, the game was suspended due to lightning in the area. After the delay, Marian scored another touchdown after Hecklinski hit freshman Taylor Summa and converted the extra point, bringing the score to 23-0.

After nearly two hours of delays, the game was called due to the weather with 5:42 remaining in the second quarter and MU was awarded the victory.

Kentucky Christian will return home this weekend to host Bethel University in the 2013 home opener. The contest is slated to begin at 1:30 p.m. The two team previously met in 2011 when the Wildcats beat KCU 25-13.
