KCU women’s basketball drops contest to Morehead State

Nov. 6, 2013 — The Kentucky Christian University women’s basketball team traveled to Morehead State for an exhibition contest with the Eagles this past Friday.

The Lady Knights hung tough with the Lady Eagles before a quick second half run by MSU helped defeat KCU 95-73.

Coach Ron Arnett said despite the loss, he was proud of his team for competing with a Division I mid-major school.

“I thought we played 30 minutes of really good basketball,” Arnett said. “There were about seven or eight minutes at the end of the first half where we lost our focus and MSU took control. But I was proud of our girls.”

The Lady Knights were led by senior guard Tanya Bowen’s game-high 34-points. Jana Glick had 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting. Newcomer Ashleigh Gyalog had 10 points while Sharonda Jones and Allie Slone each had five points.

“We’ve got six experienced players and six newcomers,” Arnett said. “I think we can be pretty good. When we rotate we’ll drop off a little but we’ve got a really good chance to have a successful season.”

Arnett added: “Allie Slone is going to be a player. She has good speed and handles the ball well and plays good defense. I thought Taylor Thrasher played well. She’s raw but big and strong and very aggressive and will give us some really good minutes as the year goes on.”

The Lady Knights started off the game quickly on baskets by Bowen and Glick. But the hot three-point shooting by MSU seniors Allie Turner and Terrice Robinson allowed the Eagles to pull away late in the first half.

“I thought our kids played smart and aggressive early in the first half,” Arnett said. “We outscored them second half which was pleasant to see.”

Bowens would score 17 points in the second half. Arnett was pleased with her offensive output.
