KCU tops off practice with spring game

May 8, 2013 — It was the beginning of a new era Saturday in Grayson as the Kentucky Christian University Knights had its spring football game to cap off practices.

The team split in to Black and White and the White team came away with a 19-3 victory on what was a perfect Saturday afternoon for football.

“When you split all your teams up in a spring game, you’ll have a lot of good things happen” Coach Gene Peterson. “We had some good things happening on defense. Offense started a little slow but when we get all of our kids together, I think things are going to pick up.”

On the first possession of the game, the White Knights advanced the ball deep into the Black Knight territory on a long pass from Graham Johnston to Lane Knost. This set up a 27-yard field goal by Andrew Slikker to put the White ahead 3-0.

After a three and out by the Black Knights, the White Knights struck in the form of a deep pass by Johnston to Tyler Hadnski. The freshman made an outstanding one-handed grab behind the defense for the 41-yard touchdown pass to put the White Knights up 10-0.

Johnston was pleased with the offense’s performance during the spring.

“There’s always rooms for improvement,” Johnston said. “The speed in getting to the edge was great. …We had some receivers get open and once we have some time we’ll be able to take some shots downfield for some scoring opportunities.”

Special teams saw plenty of action during the spring game. The first half ended with Slikker, this time kicking for the Black Knights, hit a 49 yarder to bring the score to 10-3 at the half.

The third quarter was a defensive clinic as neither team was able to put points up on the board. Luke Eisnagle put the next points on the board with minutes to play, hitting a 34 yard field goal for the White Knights, and pulling them back out to a 10 point advantage at 13-3.
