Lady Knights befuddled by Barbee

Nov. 14, 2012 — After dropping the first two games of the three-day Super 8 Classic in Grayson, KCU’s women’s basketball squad could not overcome a talented Asbury offense, falling 73-83, despite a late-game comeback.

The game started with KCU (2-5) gaining a seven-point advantage and holding the lead until the six-minute mark in the first half, until Asbury gained the equalizer on a three at 28. Asbury used shooting guard Trenia Barbee’s 20-point first half to capitalize, ending the first half with a dominant 22-7 run to go up by 12.

“Trenia is a tough player for them, and we really just didn’t have an answer for her athleticism,” said KCU Head Coach Ron Arnett. “There have been flashes of great basketball for us at times, but we just haven’t been able to put it all together for a full 40 minutes.”

Trailing 47-35, led by Tanya Bowens, KCU began the second half with 19-7 run to tie things up at 54 with 12 minutes left in regulation. The tied score would be as close as the Lady Knights would come to taking back the lead.

Turnovers have been an issue for KCU late in games and this game turned out to be no different. The Lady Knights relinquished 22 possessions, with eight occurring in the crucial final 10 minutes.

The Lady Knights’ collection of juniors led their team in the loss. Monica Stevens had seven points, Jessica Marshall picked up 10, Sharonda Jones had 18 and Bowens led her team with 23. Jones was the leading rebounder in the game with nine.

Arnett says he is hopeful his young team will turn things around.

“This was a good team here tonight, and at times we looked pretty good,” Arnett said. “Tonya is playing good basketball for us, and she’s really using her athleticism to her advantage. We are young, and I feel that by the end of the season, we will be where we want to be.”

Kentucky Christian got back to action last night when it hosted Indiana Southeast at home.
