Lady Knights claim another regional title

By Grant Stevens - Staff Writer

Feb. 29, 2012 —     On Saturday afternoon, the Lady Knights defeated Ohio Christian University for the third time this season, 87-57, on its way to yet another NCCAA Division II Mideast Regional Title.

Second only to KCU’s ladies, the Lady Knights made easy work of a Lady Warriors squad that came in ranked as a second overall seed in the Mideast Region.

Led by senior guard Tara Weddle’s 23 points, the good times kept rolling for KCU as they left no hope of an upset for OCU, with a commanding 47-24 halftime lead.

Lady Knights starting center Monica Stevens had six points and five assists in the win. Stevens said it is good to once again achieve this for the sake of her senior teammates.

“It’s been a good year for us, and I think we have played pretty good coming down the stretch,” Stevens said. “We have great senior leaders, and I am happy we were able to get another regional title for them.”

The second half was a different 20 minutes with more of the same flavor.

Junior standout guard Tanya Bowens sliced through the Lady Warrior defense on her way to nine assists, in addition to 17 points.

Defensively, the Lady Knights took away Ohio Christian’s most valuable weapon, by allowing only three long-range baskets on 18 attempts. More impressive, KCU did not give much more room to breathe from inside the three-point line, as they kept the Lady Warrior’s entire offense in check, with only 18 total field goals on the night.

Following the win, the Lady Knights will now gear up for another trip to the NCCAA Division II National Tournament in Circleville, Ohio. KCU enters the tournament as the number one seed overall, where it will take on Grace University in the first round on March 8 at 2 p.m.

“We feel like we have a good shot at winning this thing,” Stevens said. “We are confident that we can make this happen, but we also realize that we must continue to play as a team for us to be successful.”
