Football Knights picked to finish third in MSC East

Aug. 7, 2013 — The Kentucky Christian University Football Knights have been selected to finish third in the Mid South Conference east division.

Georgetown is the Mid-South Conference East Division preseason favorite and Bethel (Tenn.) and Belhaven (Miss.) are the co-favorites to win the West Division in 2013.

Georgetown received 35 voting points from the East coaches, including five of the seven first-place votes. Bethel and Belhaven each picked up 20 voting points to tie atop the preseason vote in the West Division. Bethel received three first-place votes from the West coaches while Belhaven garnered two first-place votes.

Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own team in the poll.

Georgetown begins 2013 riding a 27-game regular season winning streak dating back to the 2010 season. The Tigers have won three straight East Division titles. Georgetown owns five East crowns and 18 MSC overall regular season titles in its history.

Last season, Georgetown ended 10-1 after falling to Bethel in the NAIA Football Championship Series' First Round.

Cumberlands is projected to finish second in the East with 32 voting points, including the final two first-place votes. The Patriots finished 2012 with a 10-2 record and reached the Football Championship Series' Quarterfinals.

KCU received 24 points in the voting tally, which put them in third place according to the coaches. They were followed by Lindsey Wilson in fourth with 22 voting points.

Union is projected fifth with 15 voting points followed by Pikeville with 13 voting points and Bluefield (Va.) with six voting points.

Lindsey Wilson and Bluefield move to the East Division in 2013 after playing the 2012 season in the West Division.

Bethel has won each of the last two West Division championships and owns an eight-game winning streak against the West entering 2013.

Like Cumberlands, the Wildcats -- who ended 2012 with a 9-4 record -- reached the Football Championship Series' Quarterfinals last season, including a win at top-ranked Georgetown in the opening round of the playoffs.

Bethel has captured the West Division four times -- the most of any school since the MSC went to the two-division system in 2005.

Belhaven finished 2012 with a 6-5 record, including a 4-2 mark in the West. The Blazers lost their five games last season by a total of 35 points, including three losses against ranked opponents.

Cumberland (Tenn.) and Faulkner (Ala.) are tied for third in the preseason poll with 17 voting points each.  Cumberland received the final first-place vote.

Campbellsville is fifth in the poll with 11 voting points followed by Mid-South newcomer Reinhardt (Ga.) -- playing its first season of football in 2013 -- with five voting points.

The 2013 season begins in late August.
