Jan. 22, 2014 — On Saturday, Jan.18, the Knights and Lady Knights played host to the Royals of Johnson University from Knoxville, Tenn. Johnson controlled the tip, and scored on their opening possession. They stretched this to a small lead before KCU was up to speed in the game. The Knights' Adam Hopkins hit a 3 to cut the lead to 9-5, then after nearly stealing a ball, manages to tie one up. This little spark of defense seemed to enliven the Knights, and they fought back hard after this, tying the game at 12 all.
KCU went ahead at 20-18 on a Tyler Farley 3, with just over eight minutes to go in the first. But Johnson fought back, and pulled out to a 38-31 lead by the half.
After the break, KCU found themselves pinned down for a great while. Johnson maintained their steady play and small lead. With 12 minutes remaining, KCU was down by five at 56-51.
Caleb Ford hit a three-point basket with 7:18 to play, putting KCU up one for the first time in the half. The Knights came out of the break energized and enthused, and scoring five in a row.
They built on that lead the rest of the game, finishing at 82-67, for their first double-digit win of the year.
Caleb Ford was the leading scorer with 22, and four boards, while Trevor Hunt hit 17 to go with his six rebounds. Adam Hopkins finished with 14, and it was his shooting that kept the Knights in the game in the first half. Dylan Genung and Tyler Farley matched one another with 11 points and 5 boards each. The Knights shot 50 percent both from the line and behind the arc in the second half, and it was this steady play that saw them through the game. On Tuesday, the Knights faced Boyce College at home.
The Lady Knights of Kentucky Christian University met the Royals of Johnson University on the basketball court for the first time this season just before the men’s game.
