KCU basketball competes at Pennsylvania Classic

Dec. 4, 2013 — Both Kentucky Christian University basketball programs competed in a pre-Thanksgiving classic, traveling to Pennsylvania to play in the Valley Forge Christian College Classic.

It has been a tough season thus far for the Knights, and when they seemed to be finding their way, another problem rears it head.

Dylan Genung suffered an injury in the second game of the classic, and he did not see any action for the remainder of the tournament.

KCU fell on Thursday to Hillsdale Freewill Baptist College from Oklahoma, 83-75; on Friday they lost to Lincoln Christian University of Lincoln, Ill., 85-73; and they dropped a game on Saturday to host Valley Forge Christian College, 80-68.

Caleb Ford, who had 84 points and 29 rebounds, led the Knights. Ace Puckett had 34 points, and 25 boards, as well as five assists and a team-high nine steals. Tyler Farley dropped in 32 points, and he had 12 boards, nine assists, and four steals. Adam Hopkins had 22 points and six assists. Genung had 17 points, four rebounds, six handouts and two thefts, despite playing only the first game and about five minutes of the second game.

The Knights record moves to 1-8, and they were back in action this past Tuesday against Alice Lloyd College in Grayson.

Meanwhile, The KCU Lady Knight Basketball team continued it winning ways this weekend at the Valley Forge (Pennsylvania) Christian College Classic.

On Thursday, the Lady Knights defeated Hillsdale Freewill Baptist College 90-56. On Friday, they took down Lincoln Christian University 91-45, and on Saturday they defeated host Valley Forge Christian College 110-45.

KCU pulled down 41 rebounds per game, nearly eight more than their competition, and caused 14 more turnovers per contest than they themselves had. They outscored their opponents by more than 46 points per game, shooting .553 from the field, .426 from three-point range, and 71 percent from the foul line.

The Lady Knights were led by Tanya Bowens who had 79 points on the weekend, while she had 10 boards, 20 assists, and 11 steals. Sharonda Jones had 44 points, 14 rebounds, four steals, four assists and two blocks. Forward Jana Glick scored 42 over the weekend, had 21 boards, two assists, one block, and one steal. Transfer Ashleigh Gyalog had 24 points and 15 boards on the weekend, while freshman Allie Slone had 22 points and seven boards. Katelyn Meyer dropped in 18, pulled down four rebounds, and blocked one shot.

The Lady Knights are now 8-4 on the year. They returned home Tuesday night to face Alice Lloyd College.
