Three KCU programs earn NAIA Scholar status

July 9, 2014 — Three programs at Kentucky Christian University were named NAIA Scholar Teams for the 2013-14 academic year, the school’s athletic program announced.

The men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball programs all earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.00 or better throughout the school year to earn the distinction.

“We are very proud of these three squads,” KCU Director of Athletics Bruce Dixon said in a release. “It helps disprove the myth that athletics and academics can’t be done well together. Two of these teams finished in the top five, nationally and the third took an eventual national champion to overtime in the region final.

“The KCU community can take a tremendous amount of pride in these players.”

KCU’s women’s basketball program scored the highest GPA of the three at 3.40. The Lady Knights basketball program propelled themselves to a 19-11 season and a third place finish in the NCCAA II National Tournament. KCU loses four seniors from that squad, including leading scorer Tanya Bowens, Monica Stevens, Sharonda Jones and Jessica Marshall, a group that scored 90 percent of their total points and 85 percent of the team’s minutes.

The Lady Knight volleyball team posted a 3.37 GPA. With no seniors on last year’s 28-13 team, With the return of First Team All Americans Lauren Dunn and Magen Daniel as well as second team selection Jenna Kelley, KCU Volleyball will look to improve on its NCCAA II fifth place finish a year ago.

The Knights basketball program, despite losing 11 out of their first 12 games, would end the season going 13-4 and finishing as the runner-up of the NCCAA II Mideast Region Tournament finished the year with a team 3.00 GPA. KCU will have the majority of their roster back next season, including All-American honorable mention Caleb Ford and Ace Puckett.
