Three fatal shootings

By Tonia Rose, staff writer

July 3, 2009 A Morehead man is dead following an alleged murder-suicide in Jeffersonville, where his fiancˇ’s ex-husband entered the residence armed with two semi-automatic handguns and opened fire.

William Cain, 30, and 29-year-old Amy Renee Davis were in her double-wide on Lower Spruce Road Monday about 6 a.m. when Anthony DeWayne Patterson, 44, of Georgetown, forced his way into the home and allegedly shot Cain one time in the lower back and once in the forehead, according to Montgomery County Coroner Wally Johnson.

Patterson then held the gun to the right side of Davis’ face and pulled the trigger. The non-fatal shot led Davis to try and escape the home.

“He chased her down out in the yard and shot her fatally three times in the back,” Johnson commented Thursday. “He then went back into the house and put the gun to his right temple and shot himself.”

Police said Patterson sent Davis’ three adopted children, ages 4 through 12, from the residence prior to the shootings. According to Davis’ obituary, her two sons and one daughter do carry the last name of Patterson.

Kentucky State Police and the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department took the unharmed children into safety and placed them with relatives. Johnson said Davis was 32-weeks pregnant when she died.

At the request of Johnson, Rowan County Coroner John Northcutt was called for his assistance at the scene.

”I arrived at 8:10 a.m. and found multiple law enforcement agencies outside and inside the home,” Northcutt commented Thursday. “Both men were dead in the house and the mother was in the yard.”

Davis filed an EPO (emergency protective order) against Patterson June 23 requiring that he stay at least 1,000 feet away from her. The couple was divorced April 23 after eight years of marriage.

According to his obituary, Patterson was the father of five children and had worked 19 years as a corrections officer at the Federal Medical Center in Lexington.

Davis’ funeral took place Thursday at 2 p.m. with Northcutt and Son Home For Funerals in charge of arrangements. She worked as a caseworker with the foster children program.

A private funeral, by invitation only, took place this past Wednesday for Cain at the Herald and Stewart Home for Funerals in Mt. Sterling. His obituary states he was employed at Shell Mart (no location given).

Services were scheduled Friday for Patterson at the Tucker, Yocum and Wilson Funeral Home in Georgetown.

Davis and Cain were both put to rest at the Lovely Cemetery in Montgomery County. Patterson is to be buried at the Masonic Cemetery in Stamping Grounds. Detective Toby Gardner, KSP Morehead, is leading the investigation. Gardner was not available Thursday for comment.

NOTE: At the request of family members a photograph of William Cain was not released.
