Gillis to speak at POMC

By Myra Hogan

April 30, 2008 The annual “Parents of Murdered Children” (POMC) memorial service is set for Monday, May 5, 6:30 p.m. at New Beginnings Celebration Center in Grayson.

John W. Gillis, Director of the Office for Victims of Crime in the U.S. Department of Justice, will be special guest speaker for this year’s service.

Mr. Gillis has worked in law enforcement, served on prison boards and was awarded the National Crime Victim Service Award in 1991. President George Bush presented him the award for his help with crime victims.

His daughter Louarna’s murder in 1979 caused him to help found Justice for Homicide Victims and the Coalition of Victims Equal Rights, the founder of Victims & Friends United, an active member of Memory of Victims Everywhere and Parents of Murdered Children.

Ann Bauers, president of the Northeast Kentucky POMC she organized in 2005 following the murder of her son, welcomes the public and all family members of murdered victims to attend this special service.

Debbie Hale, John Stevens and Myron Hogan will provide music. Mary Waugh will present an interpretive dance to “Cry Out”.

“POMC provides the on-going emotional support needed to help parents and other survivors facilitate the reconstruction of a ‘new life’ and to promote a healthy resolution,” Bauers said.

The organization also provides education, prevention, advocacy, awareness and help with the criminal justice system.

“We provide support and assistance to all survivors of homicide victims while working to create a world free of murder,” Bauers added.

For more information on POMC, contact Bob Thomas at 474-5126.
