Dozens of candidates have filed for office in Carter County. The 2014 political season is starting.
Roadside campaign signs are sprouting like spring flowers. Political announcements are showing up in this and other newspapers.
Candidates and campaign volunteers are proudly driving around with magnetized signs on their cars and trucks. Some have sandwich-board signs in truck beds.
Social media sites are abuzz with candidates looking for friends online and at the polls on May 20, Kentucky’s primary election day.
Campaign calling cards are stacking up on store counters and appearing on store windows.
Other than a couple of complaints about damaged or missing yard signs, the local primary campaign has not turned mean.
At this point, we are not aware of any political dirty tricks or personal attacks on any of the local candidates.
Hopefully, it will stay that way through the primary and general elections and all of us will still be on speaking terms when the final returns are counted and the winners take office.
National and statewide campaigns in recent years have shown us the ugly side of politics with obscene amounts of money being used for “attack” ads, particularly on television.
It has been estimated that the U. S. Senate race in Kentucky could cost as much as $50 million with much of that in television commercials.
Yes, we will be bombarded with 30-second “sound bites”, some of which will come from faceless, nameless organizations.
In fact, this might be a good year to buy a digital recorder that allows you to skip commercials when you record a TV show.
We believe it’s time for local candidates to show our children that adults can disagree without being disagreeable.
In our opinion, political season need not be open season…on each other!
