Senate race poll attracts national spotlight

Feb. 12, 2014 —

“Mitch has met his match” shouted the headline on the Huffington Post, a trendy, online news aggregator and blog founded by socialite Arianna Huffington.

In case you’re not familiar with the term “aggregator”, it means someone who collects news stories from various sources and redistributes them under a different brand, in this case the Huffington Post.

Online readers then have the opportunity to post personal comments at the bottom of each article.

Huff Post, one of the website’s short names, had much to say last week about the poll showing Alison Lundergan Grimes slightly ahead of Sen. Mitch McConnell.

The Grimes campaign staff regularly sends state media stories and comments from Huff Post which they believe are critical of Kentucky’s senior senator.

It is important to note that the Huffington Post frequently has been labeled ultra-liberal in its news coverage.

One critic described it as “little more than a left wing propaganda machine posing as a news website.”

Leftist or not, it apparently has a substantial following because media giant AOL paid $315 million for the operation in 2011 and kept Ms. Huffington aboard as editor-in-chief.

Huff Post is not the only national media organization monitoring the U. S. Senate race in Kentucky.

A reporter from the New York Times spent last week in Frankfort walking the halls of the General Assembly to talk with lawmakers about McConnell and Grimes.

Fund raising and name calling have picked up considerably as the two principals take aim at each other.

Both have primary opponents but recent polls indicate the other candidates in both parties will be left in the dust in the May 20 primary.

It is apparent the entire nation is watching this election.

Let’s hope McConnell and Grimes don’t embarrass themselves…or Kentucky.
