State Auditor investigating Olive Hill

May 7, 2014 — State Auditor Adam Edelen has informed the City of Olive Hill that his office will be conducting an independent review of the city’s financial records.

The Journal-Times has obtained a letter from Edelen’s office, dated May 1, to Mayor Kenny Fankell, informing him of the state’s intent to audit the city.

Due to concerns brought to this office, the Auditor has a responsibility to ensure that the public’s money is being accounted for and spent in the best interest of taxpayers,” said Edelen in the letter.

When reached for comment Monday afternoon, Edelen’s office confirmed the audit.

Our office will be conducting a limited review of the city’s records, addressing the specific allegations that have been made. More information will be available once the report of findings is complete,” said Communciations Director Stephenie Hoelscher.

Officials from Edelen’s office met with Fankell and other city officials Wednesday morning at city hall to retrieve documents and conduct interviews regarding the allegations.

The auditors collected a number of records from the city clerk and informed us that they will attempt to conduct the audit from Frankfort,” said City Attorney Derrick Willis.

I haven’t been made aware of what the specific allegations are or who made them,” he added.

No specific timetable was given as to when a report of findings woulds be issued, but Willis says he was informed by the auditors that a typical audit process can last anywhere from four to eight weeks.
