The Grayson City Council approved some expensive motions concerning the dive team and police Department during their regular meeting on Tuesday.
Acting Police Chief Marlene Stewart told Council that mechanical issues in some of the vehicles were become a concern. If faced with another breakdown, Stewart said the department would be short a cruiser. She asked that Council approve the purchase of a new cruiser, which carries a $30,000 price tag.
Council put aside $70,000 in a May special meeting for new cruisers. The monies, coupled with an anticipated matching grant from the USDA would purchase four new vehicles.
Stewart told the council that the grant could take up to a year to come through if approved. The council voted unanimously to approve the purchase.
Fire Battalion Chief Kyle Morgan addressed the council with equipment concerns for the Dive Rescue Team.
Morgan asked Council to front $17,500 to purchase two sets of Interspiro diving equipment.
The dive team has already raised $12,000 to go toward the $29,500 total cost. Morgan said the Interspiro equipment is the safest diving system on the market.
“This is a really good thing we do here and I think we should help,” Council person Juanita Kennedy said as she made the motion to approve the request.
The motion passed unanimously.
In addition to other department reports, Council also discussed the upcoming deadline for the alcohol sales ordinance.
City Attorney Reid Glass agreed to email a preliminary draft of the ordinance to Council in anticipation of a work session on the matter. Council voted to meet Tuesday, July 16 at 6 p.m. to address any additions or concerns they may have.
Council also set the date for the first reading of the ordinance for Thursday, July 25 at 6 p.m. Two readings of the ordinance must pass and be published before alcohol sales can occur. Council also wants to send the ordinance to the State Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control for input before the reading.
