Relay for Life Friday in Olive Hill

June 19, 2013 —       The 18th annual Relay For Life of Carter County is scheduled from 7 p.m. Friday, June 21,  to 7 a.m., Saturday, June 22, at the Carter County Shrine Club Horse Show Park in Olive Hill.

This year’s event is promising to be a great time for the whole family, according to Christy Bowling, chair of Relay for Life.

Activities begin with the Survivor Lap. Bowling said there are many survivors that have pre-registered for the event but it isn’t too late to register, because they will have registration set up at the event.

Caregivers, those individuals who have helped care, support and encourage a cancer survivor, will also be encouraged to join with the survivors during their lap, according to Bowling.

The youngest Relayers will take the track following the Survivor and Caregivers Lap, for our annual “Kids’ Walk”.

Carter County’s 37 Relay For Life teams, including more than 500 team members, will then be introduced and walk the Bo Fankell Memorial Team Lap.

“Our teams have been working hard this year to help us meet this year’s goal of $125,000 after expenses”, Bowling said.

Other activities that will be taking place that evening will include inflatables for the kids as well as live music provided by Oak Grove’s Praise and Worship band, Harry and the Hoehandles, Emily Stephens, and Dark Kast.

There will be several themed laps such as the Crazy Hat Lap in memory of Bill Wentz, a sun glasses lap, and very early morning a bad hair lap.

“Relay For Life brings communities together in hope, celebration and memory. It is a unique event that offers everyone in the area an opportunity to participate in the fight against cancer,” Bowling said. “The overnight event honors those who have survived cancer, remembers those who have lost the fight, and gives everyone a way they can fight back against cancer.”
