July 27, 2012 — Heavy rains from Thursday night’s storms resulted in flash flooding throughout parts of western Carter County.
Emergency personnel were dispatched just after 4 a.m. to KY 1025 just north of West Carter High School to rescue Donna Justice and her daughter, Karen, from their mobile home that was pushed from its foundation by the flooding of Smokey Creek.
According to Emergency Management Director Tommy Thompson, the home was swept between 200 and 500 feet downstream.
Several other mobile homes on the same road suffered minor flood damage as well.
The overnight flooding of Tygart’s Creek impacted Carter Caves State Resort Park. Downed trees could be seen lining the park’s roadways, which themselves were missing huge chunks of asphalt in some places.
No flood-related injuries have been reported.
