May 22, 2013 —

The Grayson City Council approved the first reading of the 2013-14 budget in special session Tuesday night.

The $2.1 million budget includes a two percent pay raise for city employees.

Just over $17,000 will be taken out of surplus to meet the need for raises.

Councilman Terry Stamper amended the budget when making the motion to pass, adding $70,000 for new police cruisers.

Mayor George Steele told the Council that the city was in a good position to receive grant money from the USDA for new cruisers this year. The national program allows cities to obtain matching grants for the purchase of new law enforcement vehicles.

If the city receives the grant, four new cruisers will be purchased for the Grayson Police Department.

The reading passed on a four to two vote with Duane Suttles and Pearl Crum voting against.

The Council will meet in special session again on Thursday at 5 p.m. To finalize an agreement with the Library Board to act as a conduit for purchasing the old Houck Furniture building.
