Williams tapped to fill vacant Olive Hill Council seat

Dec. 19, 2012 — In a surprising move, Olive Hill City Council unanimously voted Tuesday night to appoint Tony Williams to fill the vacant Council seat for the next two years.

The vacancy occurred when Kenny Fankell, the leading vote getter among Council candidates in the November election, was appointed mayor following the resignation of Danny Sparks.

Sparks stepped down after being arrested on drug trafficking charges. He has since pleaded innocent and is awaiting grand jury action.

Williams did not seek reelection in November and had been slated to finish his term on Dec. 31.

With this appointment, however, he will serve two more years as a member of the city’s legislative body.

Kentucky law requires that persons who are appointed to unexpired terms serve until the next election cycle which will be in 2014.

If City Council had not made the appointment within 30 days, it would have become the governor’s responsibility to fill the seat.
