June 13, 2013 — The Grayson City Council worked on the city's business Tuesday while waiting for results of the alcohol sales vote during its regular monthly meeting.
“Before we get the results of this wet dry vote, I would like to commend this council on the wisdom of remaining out of public debate,” said Mayor George Steele. “It was a hot button issue and it will make it a whole lot easier to administer whatever decision and to write ordinances regarding whatever the public’s vote may be.”
While the issue of alcohol sales and the election were not on the agenda, there was some discussion once results showed that the city would permit sale. The council will hold a special meeting June 25 at 5 p.m. to act as a forum and open discussion of how to handle the legalities surrounding permitting alcohol sales in the city.
The council also accepted renewal of insurance for the Grayson Fire Department from the American Alternative Insurance Corporation. The insurance covers package, property, equipment, crime, general liability, management liability, automobile and umbrella insurance totaling $19, 952.28 in premiums. Life insurance for the firefighters comes from Combined Insurance Company of America, with a premium of $4,117.86.
The city insurance from U.S. Specialty Insurance Company was also unanimously accepted at a premium of $37,107.12 which includes package, property, general liability, public officials, employment practices liability, law enforcement liability, mobile equipment, automobile and commercial excess liability. Workers compensation insurance is being covered by Kentucky Employers Mutual Insurance (KEMI) for $17, 375.72.
Wells Fargo Insurance broker, Donna Wagoner has represented the city regarding insurance for several years and said that the premiums were the best the council could hope for as they currently have two open lawsuits.
Marlene Stewart, Grayson Police Chief reported that about 26 vehicles in the impound lot were ready for public auction. She also approached the council about the purchase of new cruisers, saying that multiple vehicles were “outdated.” Action on purchasing new vehicles is currently on hold, contingent to potential grant funding from the USDA.
The council also voted to give two surplussed cruisers to the Carter County Constables for their usage.
