Carter men sentenced in trafficking case

May 15, 2014 — Two of the three defendants in what authorities said was a major pill-trafficking network that operated out of Carter County were sentenced Monday to four years and just over three years in prison.

Brandon Logan, 28, was sentenced to 48 months by U.S. District Judge David L. Bunning. Scott Gilliam, 42, received a 37-month sentence.

Under federal law, both men will have to serve at least 85 percent of their sentences. Both also were sentenced to three years of supervised release to follow their terms of incarceration.

Bunning recommended Logan receive credit for three months he spent in custody in 2012. He also recommend Logan participate in substance-abuse counseling and vocational training while in prison and that he be designated to the Federal Correction Institute at Summit.

The judge also recommended Gilliam received substance-abuse counseling and vocational training in prison and that he be designated to the federal prison in Beckley, W.Va., to serve his sentence.

The third defendant in the case, Michael Scott Logan, 38, Brandon Logan’s uncle, also was originally scheduled to be sentenced on Monday, but his sentencing was pushed back to Sept. 8 at the government’s request, according to court records.

All three defendants pleaded guilty in January to conspiracy to distribute oxycodone.

Gilliam is the former pastor of Perry’s Branch Holiness Tabernacle, which neighbors say closed down several years ago. Authorities said the former church building was used as a “stash house” and a search of the building turned up a cache of approximately 2,400 30-milligram oxycodone tablets.

The indictment of the Logans and Gilliam was the result of a more than 18-month undercover investigation involving the FADE Drug Enforcement Task Force, the Drug Enforcement Administration and Immigration and Customs Enforcement. More than $1 million in cash and other assets were seized during the course of the investigation.
