ACTC announces 2013-14 Theatre season

June 27, 2013 — Ashland Community and Technical College Theatre has announced the 2013-14 Theatre Season.  The season will mix the old and the new, with classics by Shakespeare and Dickens combined with new pieces written by ACTC students and employees.

The season opens with Kiss Me Kate, a musical version of Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew set to Cole Porter's music and lyrics. Based on the book by Bella and Samuel Spewack, the musical was Porter’s biggest hit.  Since its Broadway premier in 1948, the production has been seen by millions of people. The last Broadway revival in 1999 received four Tony Awards.  Performances will be given Thursday through Sunday, October 17 to 27.

A Christmas Carol: Scrooge and Marley ushers in the holidays with a seasonal favorite. Adapted by Isreal Horovitz, this modern day variation of Charles Dickens’ novel is set to a score of seasonal music and Christmas carols. This year will be ACTC theatre’s 20th presentation of the classic Christmas story.  Public performances are December 5 to 8, and matinees for area school groups are December 4 to 6.

William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet will be presented by a cast of ACTC and Boyd County High School students.  This classic tale has been an audience favorite for generations, combining romance and tragedy as the “star-crossed” lovers struggle to hide their love from their feuding families.  Performances are Friday to Sunday, February 21 to March 2, and school matinees are February 21 and 28.

A Festival of One-Act Plays in March will feature monologues and plays written by ACTC students and faculty and performed by the college acting class and other ACTC students and faculty.  New and experienced writers are invited to sign up for ENG 207 Creative Writing – Playwriting, a class taught this fall by English Instructor Jonathan Joy.  Performances are March 28 to 30.

ACTC Theatre presents live “community theatre” productions as a learning experience for theatre students and drama club members.  The productions also offer performance opportunities to college alumni, faculty, staff and area residents.

All performances are in the J. B. Sowards Theatre at the College Drive Campus. For more information, contact Edward Figgins, Associate Professor and ACTC Theatre Director, at 606-326-2073 or email:  Additional Theatre information is on the web at under “Student Life.”
